Squires Kitchen Exhibition 2015: The Prizewinners

The annual Squires Kitchen Exhibition competitions are one of the highlights of the show and a great opportunity for bakers to showcase their creative talents. Held each year at the Farnham Maltings in Surrey, Squires Kitchen’s boutique event is the longest running of its kind in Europe, and is the perfect place to find out everything you need to know and take your baking and cake decorating skills to the next level.

Competition entries were on display throughout the exhibition weekend on 13th–15th March, with the panel of expert judges presenting the winners with their prizes in a special ceremony on the final day. This year’s prizes included Kenwood kMix stand mixers, the ultimate cake baking and decorating kit from Mason Cash and Squires Kitchen International School vouchers to name but a few.

Class 1: Celebration Cake with Decorative Royal Icing

For this competition class, entrants were asked to decorate a sugarpaste-covered cake with a decorative royal icing design for a special celebration. Sponsored by Mason Cash, the prizes were presented by Ceri DD Griffiths and Tessa Whitehouse.

Class 2: Wedding Cake Inspired by Old Hollywood Glamour

Entrants were given the challenge of producing a two-tier wedding cake decorated to evoke the glamour of Old Hollywood. Sponsored by Squires Kitchen, the prizes were presented by Jill Fisher and Liz Finch.

Class 3: Green and White Sugar Flower Arrangement or Spray

Presented by Paddi Clark and Alan Dunn, the prizes for the best floral displays with a green and white colour palette were sponsored by Squires Kitchen International School.

Class 4: Novelty Cake Inspired by a Capital City

Entrants were given the brief of constructing a novelty cake inspired by the culture, landmarks, food or other defining feature of a capital city. Sponsored by Kenwood, the prizes were presented by Sue Griffiths and Karen Taylor.

Class 5: Miniature Wedding Cake

The stunning wedding cakes made for this class all had to have a minimum of two tiers and fit within a tiny 15cm (6”) cube. Linda Garnham and Makiko Searle presented the prizes, which were sponsored by Tate & Lyle.

Class 6: His and Hers Cupcakes

Entrants took on the challenge of designing and making a minimum of seven cupcakes with a freestyle ‘his and hers’ theme. Ann Skipp and Jan Clement-May presented the Tala-sponsored prizes.
