Squires Kitchen tutor Claire Fitzsimons brought sugarcraft to a new audience earlier this month with a marizipan modelling workshop for older people in the community.
The workshop was run by Holiday at Home, a Surrey-based charity which hosts two days of craft-based activities every summer for older people in the community who cannot take a break away from home. Holiday at Home organiser Kathryn Beesley said, ‘Claire’s workshop was definitely one of the highlights of the event. Being creative is so therapeutic and it is lovely when our guests have something tangible to take home and display.’
Claire also enjoyed her time with the group, commenting, ‘It was a really fun afternoon, full of jolly characters!’ They all made beautiful marzipan roses and leaves using only a few basic tools. Claire teaches several foundation-level courses at Squires Kitchen International School which are ideal for beginners, so she put her skills and expertise to good use.
An enjoyable afternoon was had by all and the students celebrated their achievements afterwards with a cake which Claire decorated for them. ‘We cut the cake and enjoyed it at tea time yesterday,’ reported Kathryn, ‘which seemed a fitting celebratory note to end on.
